GLADYS SCOTT '27

Gladys Scott served DePauw's Women's Athletic Association as its secretary and treasurer while also serving as chairman of the Rifle team. Known as a leader in physical education, Scott has been a pioneer in the study of human movement. She has authored several textbooks in the area of exercise physiology and has been acitve in the Ameican Allliance for Health, Physical Education and recreation, serving as national vice president and chairman of the Physical Education Division. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa, in 1931 and 1937 respectively. Appointed as head of the Department of Physical Education for Women at Iowa in 1955, she served in that capacity until her retirement in 1974. She was the principal investigator in two research contracts with the Research and Development Section of the United States Army. She also served as president of the American Academy of Physical Education in 1962-63. As a volunteer, she organized Red Cross swimming classes in Iowa City and worked as a trained volunteer for the American Cancer Society, encouraging cancer patients during their recovery periods.
