DWIGHT TALLMAN '59
Inducted: 1992
A three-year letterman in basketball and four-year in football, Dwight
Tallman was the Most Valuable Player of both teams during his senior year.
Tallman was a three-time first team all-conference football player and
also was named to the Little All-American Academic first team and the
all-Methodist first team as a senior. His 13.6 rebounds per game average
during the 1958-59 basketball season still ranks as the second best in
school history, while his career average of 8.9 per game is the fifth best
all-time. A long-time high school teacher throughout Illinois and Indiana,
Tallman also coached basketball, football, cross country, track, baseball
and golf. His basketball teams won five holiday tournaments, eight
sectionals and two regionals. He also won the semi-state and state
championships as coach of Muncie Central High School in 1963. For his
efforts Tallman was named North Central Conference and state of Indiana
Coach of the Year. After completing his teaching and coaching career, he
served as an assistant principal at Penn and River Forest High Schools
before beginning his current position as assistant superintendent of
schools for LaPorte Community Schools in LaPorte, Ind. He has also served
on various boards in LaPorte. In 1989 Tallman was inducted into the
Delaware County Hall of Fame.
