Richard H.
Tomey '60
Inducted: 1994
A catcher for the DePauw baseball team, Dick Tomey earned varsity letters
each of his final three seasons in addition to freshman numerals. He
served as co-captain of the team his senior year and was named all-Indiana
Collegiate Conference Honorable Mention. Following his graduation he
served as a graduate assistant football coach at Miami University under Bo
Schembechler and John Pont. He later was an assistant coach at Northern
Illinois, Davidson, Kansas and UCLA. He then became the head coach at
Hawaii where his teams posted a 63-46-3 record. In 1987 he was named the
head coach at the University of Arizona and promised to take the Wildcats
to another level. He did just that in directing them to a Pacific 10
Conference co-championship in 1993 and a Fiesta Bowl win. Tomey earned
Western Athletic Coach of the Year honors in 1981 after leading Hawaii to
a 9-2 record and a second place conference finish. He earned similar
honors in the Pacific 10 in 1992 after a fifth place finish which included
a win over top-ranked Washington. He remains active, playing several
sports. He has pitched and caught in summer baseball leagues against
players 30 years his junior. A member of the Michigan City (Ind.) High
School Hall of Fame, Tomey has posted a 109-77-7 record in his first 16
seasons as a head coach.
