Jay C. True '81
Inducted: 1997
Jay True, a product of Bloomington, Ind., was a Rector Scholar and one of
DePauw's most outstanding football wide receivers. By the time he had
completed his four year-career, he had been selected NCAA Division III
All-American twice; First Team Academic All-American; MVP three times; and
named MVP of the 1980 Monon Bell Game. He set seven school records: most
receptions in a game-16; most receptions in a season-65; most receptions
in a career-195; most receiving yards in a game-201; most receiving yards
in a season-941; and most receiving yards in a career-2,573. As a junior
he began receiving attention from several professional teams, notably the
Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. Asked about all
the attention True said, "Of course I'm flattered, but I must think
realistically. I am only 5'9" and 150 pounds. I cannot really see myself
on the pro football field." Following graduation, he spent two years
teaching math and coaching basketball, baseball and football at St.
Francis DeSales High School in Chicago. He left to earn an M.B.A. from
Indiana University in 1985. After working for Cadillac Motor Car Division
for 11 years, he joined Fleetwood Homes in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1996 as
retail marketing manager. He has been active in coaching and officiating
in his daughters' pee wee baseball, basketball and soccer leagues. True
resides in Florida with his wife, Jennifer; and their two children,
Madison and Taylor.
