ALVIN F. VOLKMAN '34
Inducted: 1990
Al Volkman was a Rector Scholar at DePauw and a member of the legendary
1933 football team, which gained the distinction of being undefeated,
untied and unscored upon. Playing the end position, Al was named to three
Little State teams and to the Indianapolis Times all-state team. Al earned
three varsity letters in football, two in track and one in basketball
while at DePauw. He graduated with a pre-med degree which included majors
in chemistry and zoology and was admitted to both Indiana and
Northwestern's medical schools, but decided instead on high school
teaching and coaching. In his six years of teaching science in Dayton,
Ohio, several of Al's students ranked at or near the top of all science
students in the state. In 1942 he began a 30-year career with General
Motors Corporation, where he held several management positions in Ohio and
California and also coached a number of plant football teams. In
retirement, Al has earned recognition for outstanding volunteer work in
the Santa Barbara, California, area.
