TIGERS HANDLE RAVENS; TIED FOR THIRD
Anderson, Ind.--It's funny what a week can do for an ailing basketball
team. Last week, the Tigers came off a 17-point loss at Franklin and were in
fifth place in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. This week,
they're winners of two straight, tied for third in the ICAC and, in large part,
in control of their own destiny. The latest victim was Anderson as the Tigers
picked up their first ICAC road win this year by an 81-64 count.
With the win DePauw improved to 14-6 overall and 4-4 in the ICAC.
Anderson fell to 12-8 and 2-7.
The Tigers opened the game in frightening fashion with turnovers in
each of their first four possessions. However, despite that, they found
themselves down by just three.
"That was scary," Coach Bill Fenlon said of the early problems. "One of
our biggest problems in our losses has been the poor starts. Those turnovers
were totally unforced."
The Tigers still trailed 5-4, before the three-point barrage began.
Craig Stewart buried a three and Ryan Miller nailed a pair and the Tigers were
up by six in just over a minute. The lead reached as many as 11 points at 29-
18, but the Ravens rallied with a 14-3 run to knot the score at 32-32. Jason
Kreag and Ben McCormick closed the half with three-pointers to send the teams
to the break with DePauw ahead 38-32. Over the first 20 minutes, the Tigers
nailed nine three-pointers in 14 attempts and connected on 64 percent of all
their field goal tries. However, they also committed 13 turnovers.
The Ravens stayed close for much of the second half and still trailed
by only 58-51 with 7:12 remaining, but the Tigers scored 13 straight over a
4:23 span to take a 20-point lead and put it away.
Five Tigers scored in double figures including a career-high 15 from
Stewart and 14 from Ryan Miller. McCormick added 11, while Matt McCollum
and Kreag each popped in 10. Tigers leading scorer, Ryan Hooker, totaled
just nine points, but only attempted seven field goals.
"They were running two guys at Hook and he did a good job of finding
the guys on the outside," Fenlon said. We got a lot of good play from a lot of
people. We definitely played with more confidence."
The Tigers must now prepare for a Wednesday home game against Wabash at
7:30 p.m.
