TIGERS FALL TO PANTHERS IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE;
HOST FRANKLIN ON THURSDAY IN ICAC CHAMPIONSHIP
Hanover, Ind.--DePauw's Tigers ran into one of the nation's best
basketball teams on Saturday and the Hanover College Panthers probably played
one of their best games of the season in whipping the Tigers 75-49 at the
Collier Arena. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 16-8 overall and 6-6 in
Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Hanover finishes regular season
play at 20-4 overall and ICAC champions by three games with an 11-1 conference
mark.
DePauw's Jason Kreag started the scoring with an offensive tip less than
a minute into the game, but that would be the only lead of the game for the
Tigers. The Panthers scored the next 12 points to take a 10-point lead at the
14:37 mark.
"I thought we had some good shots early," DePauw Head Coach Bill Fenlon
said. "Maybe if we hit some of them, things are different. But they're one of
the top teams in the county and their top five played like it."
The lead reached as many as 18 points at 24-6 and 26-8 before the
Tigers' Brad Stevens caught fire with eight points in a 1:34 span and DePauw
eventually cut the deficit to nine at 28-19 and 30-21. The Panthers went into
halftime with a 36-23 lead.
Ryan Miler got the Tigers started in the second half with a three-
pointer to make it a 10-point game, but five straight Hanover buckets including
the last two on an alley-oop dunk and layup by David Benter made it 46-26 with
14:32 left which put the Tigers away.
Stevens was the lone double-figure scorer for DePauw with 10 first-half
points. Benter, a likely two-time ICAC Player of the Year, led Hanover with 19
points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Andy Goshorn added 10 points.
"We made Benter pass the ball today and he really created some things
out there," Fenlon said. "He obviously is a scorer, but today he made some
great passes."
The Tigers finished tied with Rose-Hulman for third in the ICAC
standings and won the coin toss on Sunday morning, thus earning the number
three seed and the right to host Franklin at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of
the ICAC Championship on Thursday.
