TIGERS FALL TO MANCHESTER IN ICAC SEMIFINALS
Hanover, Indiana-- The DePauw men's basketball team held as much as a
six-point lead in the first half, but it was the second-seeded Manchester
Spartans who came out strong in the second half and took a 58-53 victory over
the Tigers in the first semifinal game of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic
Conference Championship. Manchester takes its 19-7 record into Saturday's
championship game against Rose-Hulman. DePauw closes the season with a 17-9
record.
Manchester held a 17-16 lead with 7:53 left in the first half before
the Tigers rattled off six straight points with the last five coming from Matt
McCollum. The lead reached six at 24-18 after Ryan Hooker's jumper with 4:05
remaining. DePauw led at halftime 29-23.
The Spartans came out on fire in the second half as Brad Knoy opened
with a layup and Chad Berry followed with a pair of baskets giving Manchester
a 32-29 lead just 2:12 into the half. The Tigers regained the lead briefly
after a Ryan Hooker basket at the 16:21 mark. Manchester went on another run
with six straight points to take a five-point lead with 12:29 left.
The Manchester lead was just one at 47-46 after Jason Kreag's free
throw with 4:17 left, but Knoy hit three free throws to make it 50-46 with
3:19 remaining. Brad Stevens scored on a layup just 16 seconds later and was
fouled, but missed a free throw. Chad Berry and Burt Paddock each scored
buckets to increase the lead to six with 1:59 left.
The key blow to the Tigers chances came when Jason Kreag was whistled
for a foul on Paddock. The Tiger coaching staff was looking for an offensive
foul, but instead Paddock went to the line and buried two free throws to
extend the margin to eight points. Kreag scored a layup with 34 seconds left
and a three-pointer just four seconds later to cut the margin to 56-53, but
the Spartans hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Paddock led Manchester with 17 followed by Knoy with 11 and Berry with
10. Berry grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. McCollum and Kreag each scored 16
points for the Tigers. Hooker, who finished with eight points, is the 16th
player in DePauw's 92-year basketball history to reach 1,000 points as his
career total stands at exactly 1,000.
