TIGERS WIN NAIL-BITER; HOLD DOWN THIRD PLACE IN ICAC
Greencastle, Ind.-- DePauw hit just one field goal in the final nine
minutes of the game, but it may have one of the biggest of the season as Ryan
Miller buried a three-pointer from the left side with 10 seconds left to give
his DePauw Tigers a 62-61 win over rival Wabash College on Wednesday evening.
Wabash had two chances at the game-winner including a tip-in which was off the
mark at the buzzer.
The win lifted DePauw's overall record to 15-6 and their Indiana
Collegiate Athletic Conference mark to 5-4. Wabash fell to 10-10 overall and
2-7 in the ICAC. The Tigers entered play ranked in a tie for sixth in the
Midwest Region rankings.
The Tigers led by as many as 11 in the first half before the Little
Giants battled back to within four at halftime, 34-30. Wabash scored the first
four points of the second half to tie the score at 34, but the Tigers got the
lead back to 44-40 on a Craig Stewart three-pointer with 13:29 left.
Wabash's Chad Tabor, then went on a tear. The freshman from New Castle
scored the Little Giants next 14 points in a span of 3:27 with the last six
coming from three-point range and giving Wabash a 54-48 lead with 9:28 left.
Craig Stewart converted a three-point play with 9:13 left to cut the
deficit to 54-51. DePauw connected on six of six free throws to trim the lead
to 58-57 with just over four minutes left, but Tabor hit a free throw and
later a layup to give Wabash a 61-57 advantage with 1:37 remaining.
Ryan Hooker nailed a pair of free throws with 1:06 left to cut the lead
to 61-59. Tabor was whistled for a double dribble with 42 seconds left and the
Tigers called timeout at the 29-second mark. Craig Stewart was open for a
three-pointer which was off the mark, but the ball finally ended up in
Hooker's hands and after a series of passes, Miller was open for the winning
shot.
Chad Tabor's jumper was off the mark and Shawn Tabor's tip-in fell
short as the buzzer sounded and the crowd stormed the court.
Hooker and Stewart each scored 15 in the win. Stewart's 15 equaled the
career-high he scored on Saturday at Anderson. Chad Tabor topped all scorers
with 26 followed by Geoff Faerber with 10.
DePauw travels to Manchester on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game, while
Wabash hosts Hanover at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
