Tigers outlast Colonels; defending national champions await in title game
 GREENCASTLE, IND.- The Tigers used clutch free throw shooting down the
stretch to hold of a surge from the visiting Centre College Colonels and win 66-65. The Tigers advance
to the championship game of the DePauw Tipoff Tournament where they will face defending national champion
Illinois Wesleyan University at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Titans defeated Washington (Mo.) University 76-63
in the opening game of the tournament.
DePauw nailed all six of its free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds and
needed each one as the Colonels' freshman guard Brian Britt scored nine points in the final 43 seconds including
a three-pointer with three seconds left. Junior guard Brad Stevens buried the first four from the line and rookie Bob
Steiner nailed the final two with just eight seconds left to seal the win.
The Tigers trailed by as many as seven in the first half, but rallied to take a
32-28 lead at the break. That lead reached as many as 10 in the second half at 55-45 after a Stevens three-pointer
with 7:11 left. They still led 60-53 with just over a minute left, but Britt's heroics nearly spoiled the season opener for the Tigers.
Stevens led the Tigers with 14 points and six rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
Freshman Dave Gifford added 10 points and senior Craig Stewart blocked four shots and had three steals. Britt and Bryan Bates led Centre with 19 each. Stephen Hodges had 10 points, a game-high nine rebounds and four blocks.
