Tigers fall in ICAC opener to unbeaten Grizzlies
GREENCASTLE, IND. - The Tigers fell behind early, but battled back to trail by just three, 26-23, at halftime. However, the second half was a different story as the Old Gold shot just 24 percent and Franklin nailed half of its shots to win 60-45 in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams. DePauw fell to 3-1 with the loss, while Franklin remains unbeaten at 4-0.The teams were tied at 9-9 before the visitors went on a 12-2 run capped off by a pair of Culley DeGroote jumpers to make it 21-11 with 6:27 remaining in the first half.
Still trailing by 10 at the 3:31 mark, the Tigers outscored Franklin 8-1 over the next two minutes to close the gap to three and that's where it stood at halftime. Amazingly, the Tigers were still close despite committing 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
The Tigers were ice cold to start the second half, due in part to Franklin's defense. The Old Gold committed four turnovers and missed five shots in the first five minutes of the second half and were outscored 7-0 to fall behind by 10 once again. Bob Steiner's jumper broke the ice for the Tigers, but the lead would be double digits the rest of the way and reaching as much as 19 points on a couple of occasions.
Corey Yost led the Tigers with 15 points, three assists and three steals, and Jack Kidd collected his first double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Culley DeGroote led Franklin with 19 followed by point guard Jason Sibley with 18. The Tigers were outrebounded by just one (33-32) and collected 10 offensive rebounds, but shot just 34 percent for the contest.
The Old Gold travels to Franklin Friday and Saturday for the Coca-Cola/Kroger Classic where they will play Albion at 6 p.m. on Friday and Purdue-North Central on Saturday at 1 p.m.
