Tigers Postwin over Britons
FRANKLIN, IND. - The Tigers used tough defensive pressure and took the ball right at the Britons on offense and came away with a hard-fought 57-49 win in the opening game of the Coca-Cola/Kroger Classic at Franklin College. The 4-1 Tigers take on Purdue-North Central at 1 p.m. on Friday.
The Tigers trailed early by as many as five points before knotting the score at 21 all on a three-pointer by Corey Yost with 5:22 left in the first half. Josh Burch's trey with six seconds left gave the Tigers a 29-28 lead at the break. The first half saw Albion shoot 61 percent from the floor, but commit 16 turnovers.
After Doug Shepherd's layup gave Albion a 35-34 advantage with 11:54 to play, the Tigers scored eight straight to take a 42-35 lead at the 9:12 mark. The first three came on a three-point play from Jack Kidd and the last five on free throws from Jess McKinney.
Albion battled back to within 44-42 at the 5:54 mark and were still down by just three with 1:16 left, but the Tigers hit five of six from the line to close the game.
"We got the ball on the low post and let our offense evolve," a pleased coach Bill Fenlon said. "That's what we didn't do against Franklin. We played superb defense in the second half."
Josh Burch led the Tigers with a career-high 12 points, while Craig Stewart added 11. Jack Kidd hauled down eight rebounds and nailed all five of his free throw attempts. Jason Klein led the 3-1 Britons with 13 followed by TyQuan Lenyard with 12.
