GREENCASTLE, Indiana - A
16-1 run midway through the second half broke open a tie game and
propelled DePauw to a 71-61 victory over visiting Rose-Hulman. With the victory the Tigers improved
to 17-6 overall and 11-5 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference. Rose-Hulman fell to 15-8 overall and 12-4 in the SCAC. The
win snapped the Engineers' 10-game win streak. The Engineers jumped out to an early
seven-point lead, but the Tigers went on a 12-2 streak to take a 21-18
lead late in the first half. DePauw went to the break with a 34-30
advantage after Joe Ringger hit four free throws in the final 49
seconds of the period. With the game tied at 44-44,
the Tigers scored the next nine points and 16 of the next 17. Mike
Howland scored eight during the run including two threes and a layup.
His second three-pointer of the stretch pushed the DePauw lead to 13
before Matt Kleyemer's basket made it 60-45 with 6:49 left. The
closest the Engineers would get was the final, 10-point margin. Ringger led the Tigers with
22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. His 19 rebounds were the most
by a DePauw player since David Galle grabbed 21 against Manchester in
a double-overtime game in 1985. Howland scored 17 points
including 13 in the second half and Nixon added 11. Nixon became the
17th player in men's history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Jimmy Kosieniak paced
Rose-Hulman with 16 points, with Chris Unton added 13 and Ryan Harris
12. Unton and Harris each grabbed nine rebounds. DePauw closes out the season
with a Friday home game against Sewanee and a Saturday evening contest
with Centre. Both games tip off at 8 p.m.
