Smith wins national title in rookie season

Freshman Colin Smith is bringing home DePauw's third Division III individual national championship after winning the discus at the NCAA Division III Championships at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

Tigers place third in final meet before ICAC Championships

The Tigers placed third in the 11-team field at the Millikin Classic in the team's final meet before the ICAC Championships in Terre Haute on April 25.

Kris Solmos took the team's only first place finish in the steeplechase. Multiple scorers for the Old Gold included: Jake Carpenter (800, 1500); Josh Trisler (800,1500); Tom Henshaw (110H, 400H, high jump) and Colin Smith (hammer, shot put).

Smith breaks school record with nation's longest discus throw; Tigers finish eighth at Indiana Intercollegiate

Freshman Colin Smith (Fort Wayne/Elmhurst) made DePauw track and field history at Saturday's Indiana Intercollegiates in Indianapolis as he not only won the discus throw, but finished with a school record and this year¼s longest throw in Division III.

Smith's throw of 170 feet, four inches, also earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at Macalester College in St., Paul, Minn., May 21-23.

Smith's throw, better than last year¼s national championship heave, broke the previous DePauw mark of 162 feet, 0 inches set in 1976 by Mike Kinney. It also was nearly 10 feet beyond the qualifying standard.

Tiger high jumper Jeff Wagner won that event with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches.

As a team the Tigers placed 8th out of 18 teams.

Tigers place fifth at own invitational
