DEPAUW FRESHMAN WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

         St. Paul, Minn.-DePauw freshman Colin Smith (Fort Wayne/Elmhurst) captured the third NCAA Division III championship in school history today as he won the discus throw at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

         Smith, seeded first entering the competition, finished with a best throw of 50.14 meters (164 feet, 6 inches) and topped second-place Joshua King of Tufts University by .08 meters.

         DePauw's two previous Division III national champions were Alan Hill in track and field (pole vault) in 1981 and Midi Smyth in swimming (100-yard backstroke) in 1985.
