Smith and Carpenter earn all-America honors; Tigers finish tied for 28th at NCAA Division III Championships
Sophomore Colin Smith's first throw in the discus at the 1999 NCAA Division III Championships was his longest and the third-best of his collegiate career, but Pacific Lutheran's Luke Jacobson topped it by just three feet, three inches in the finals. Smith, the defending discus champion earned all-America honors with his second-place effort.

Senior Jake Carpenter turned in the second-best 1500-meter time of his career in 3:52.93 and finished seventh in the event and also earned all-America honors.

As a team, the Tigers totaled 10 points and finished in a tie for 28th place. Complete meet results can be accessed from the official site of the championships.

Carpenter advances to 1500 finals; Smith just misses spot in hammer finals
Senior Jake Carpenter, seeded fifth at the NCAA Championships in the 1500-meter run, ran the fifth-fastest time in pre-lims to qualify for Saturday's finals. Carpenter finished in 3:52.12. Sophomore Colin Smith just missed qualifying for the hammer throw finals as his best throw of 170-10 (52.08m) was the 10th best in pre-lims. Smith attempts to defend his national championship in the discus on Saturday afternoon and enters as the top seed.

Tigers place third at SCAC Championships
DePauw placed third at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Trinity University in San Antonio. Trinity won the meet with 174 points, followed by Rhodes with 152 and DePauw with 118. Earning all-conference honors, by finishing in the top three were: Tim Sutton (400 meters, 49.65, 3rd), Brian Thompson (800 meters, 1:56.09, 2nd), Jake Carpenter (1,500 meters, 3:58.27, 1st), Luke Flory ( 5,000 meters, 16:02.28, 3rd), Shawn Odle (110 hurdles, 15.45, 1st; 400 hurdles, 56.89, 3rd), Jeremy Riggle (3,000 steeplechase, 9:53.21, 2nd), 4 x 100 relay (43.12, third), 4 x 400 relay (3:22.42, 3rd), Colin Smith (discus, 51.50 meters, 1st; shot put, 15.12 meters, 2nd) and Mike Hult (shot put, 13.92 meters, 3rd).

Meet at Millikin canceled
The track and field meet scheduled at Millikin University has been canceled due to adverse weather conditions. The Tigers resume action at the SCAC Championships in San Antonio on April 23-24.

Tigers finish in sixth-place tie at Little State
Behind Colin Smith's two first-place, school record and national-qualifying finishes in the hammer and discus throws, the Tigers placed in a tie for sixth at the Little State Championships at Anderson University.

Colin Smith was named the men's field events MVP after another outstanding performance.

The DePauw sophomore improved upon his school records in the hammer throw and discus in taking home first place in each event. Smith's throw of 54.54 meters (178-11) in the discus automatically qualified him for nationals and broke his school record in the event. He is the defending Division III discus champion. In the hammer he totaled 56.61 meters (185-9) which improved upon his national qualifying throw from the previous week. Both tosses also set stadium records at Anderson and the discus throw is the best in Division III this year. Smith was also sixth in the shot put at 14.40 meters (47-3).

Jake Carpenter placed fourth in the 5,000 in 15:27.39 and fifth in the 1500 in 4:00.04. Jeremy Riggle placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:58.20, Luke Flory was fifth in the 5,000-meter run in 15:36.59 and Ryan McGuffey was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 11.53. Eric Fruth was seventh in the 10,000 meters in 32:59.20. Eighth place finishes were turned in by Tim Sutton in the 400 meters in 50.64 seconds and P.J. Little in the 800 meters in 1:59.54. Both relays finished in fifth place.

Tigers Finish Fifth at Emory Meet
Sophomore Colin Smith took home first place finishes in the discus and hammer throw and was second in the shot put to lead the Old Gold to a fifth place showing at the Emory University Meet. Other scorers for the Tigers included Mike Hult (3rd, shot), Andy Irwin (4th, shot; 4th, discus; 6th, javelin), Jeremy Riggle (4th, steeplechase), Jake Carpenter (4th, 1500 meters), David Macon (5th, triple jump) and 4 x 400 relay (fifth).
