Tiger Duo Set for NCAA Track & Field Championships; Smith Looks to Defend
National Title
Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw sophomore Colin Smith (Fort Wayne,
Ind./Elmhurst) and senior Jake Carpenter (Oregon, Ill./Oregon)
are qualifiers for this weekıs 1999 NCAA Division III Track and Field
Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
Smith, the defending Division III champion in the discus as a freshman,
has the nationıs top throw of the year in the event at 178-11 (54.54 meters).
He set the mark at the Little State Championships at Anderson University
on April 11. The throw broke his own school record set last year.
Smith is also seeded fourth in the hammer throw with a heave of 189-11
(57.88 meters) at the National Invitational at Indiana University on April
30. Four times this year, Smith broke his own school record in the event.
He was also an indoor all-America selection in March with a sixth place
finish in the weight throw.
Carpenter is seeded fifth in the 1500-meter run after breaking his own
school record on Saturday at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington
in 3:50.26. A week earlier, Carpenter qualified provisionally with a school-record
run of 3:54.67 at the Butler University Twilight Meet at IUPUI.
Trials for the 1500 are scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 with
finals slated for Saturday, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. Hammer throw competition
takes place at 5 p.m. on Thursday with the discus beginning at 1:30 p.m.
on Saturday.
