Greencastle, Ind. - The 2001 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships get underway at 9 a.m., Friday, May 18, with the first quarterfinal match of the three-day team competition at DePauw University's Blackstock Courts.

Top-seed Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) College (34-1) faces Massachusetts Institute of Technology (20-3) in the first of Friday's four matches. The 11 a.m. match pits fourth-seed Emory (Ga.) University (17-5) against University of California, Santa Cruz (13-5).

The third semifinal match includes third-seed Willliams (Mass.) College (11-5) against Washington (Md.) College (19-1) at 1 p.m. The final quarterfinal match, at 3 p.m., is between second-seed University of Redlands (Calif.) (20-4) and Kalamazoo (Mich.) College (16-9).

Semifinals are on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with the third-place match at noon on Sunday and the championship match at 3 p.m. Trinity (Texas) University was the 2000 team champion.

The eight competing schools have combined for 19 of the 25 Division III titles with Kalamazoo leading the way with seven. UC Santa Cruz has won four championships, while Redlands has totaled three. Gustavus Adolphus and Washington (Md.) each have won two and Williams won its first in 1999. Emory and MIT are looking for their first team championships.

Beginning Monday, May 21, and continuing through Wednesday, May 23, 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams battle for individual titles. Finals for singles take place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday with the doubles title match slated for 1 p.m. Carnegie Mellon's Kayvon Fatahalian returns to defend his 2000 title. Peter Gladkin and Thomas Oechel of UC Santa Cruz won last year's doubles championship.

The singles and doubles draws will be conducted on Sunday, May 20, and will be posted as soon as possible.
