March 7, 2009, Maryville, Tenn. — Sixth-ranked DePauw opened the 2009 season with a sweep of its two games this afternoon. The Tigers topped Maryville (Tenn.) by a 10-0 score in five innings before blanking Piedmont, 8-0, in six innings in the second game.
In the Maryville game, Megan Soultz pitched a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks in picking up the win. The Tigers scored in all five innings and totaled 11 hits. Chelsy Patterson, Emma Minx and Carolyn Bartlett each collected two hits. Katie Beckham suffered the loss as the Scots dropped to 3-6.
Soultz hurled a four-hit shutout over six innings and recorded four strikeouts in picking up her 26th career shutout. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the fourth before scoring two each in the fourth and fifth innnings and three in the sixth. DePauw totaled eight hits paced by Paterson with two and six others with one each. Haley Buchanan led the Tigers with two RBI on a two-run homer in the fifth. Lindsay Drevlow suffered the loss.
