March 31, 2009, Bloomington, Ill. — Each team totaled three hits, but host Illinois Wesleyan scored three times in taking a 3-0 win over visiting DePauw. The start of the first game was delayed by over two hours and the second game was canceled.
The Tigers, ranked seventh by Division III Softball-The Newsletter and 16th in the coaches' poll dropped to 13-7, while the Titans (12th/18th) improved to 12-1.
Illinois Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the second with a pair of unearned runs. Sarah Carlson singled with one out and moved to second on Kris Lee's base hit. Natalie Chase's groundout moved both runners into scoring position and they both scored when Kayla Mahoney reached on a Tiger error.
Mahoney led off the fifth with a double to right. Lisa Male entered as a pinch-runner and moved to third on Jordan Menendez's sacrifice bunt. Monica Urban's sacrifice fly plated Male.
The Tigers totaled just three hits with Rachel Gill leading the way with two and Jennifer Kosinski adding the other. Three different Titans had one hit each in the win.
Christy Engel improved to 6-1 with the win, while Megan Soultz dropped to 13-7.
DePauw returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday when it hosts Sewanee in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
