GAME STATISTICS

GREENCASTLE, IND.-You'd have a hard time convincing women's basketball coach Kris Huffman that this ICAC game was played on flat pine boards because DePauw seemed to be climbing a mountain all night in its 51-48 loss to Hanover.

The Panthers ran out to a 9-0 lead to begin the game, as the Tigers couldn't scratch for the first five plus minutes of the game. Ann Hall (Fr., Bourbon, Ind./Triton) finally made two jumpers and a layup to get the Tigers off the schneid.

But DePauw continued to struggle. Paula Boback (So., Crystal Lake, Barrington) epitomized the Tigers' futility when she was called for a foul on Amy Macy (So., Columbus, Ind./East) as the buzzer went off to end the half. Macy made two out of three free throws to make the halftime score 28-18 as the teams made their ways to the dressing room.

The Panthers maintained their lead in the second half, as the Tigers looked like the gang that couldn't shoot straight. As the game moved to the last five minutes, though, the Tigers, keyed by tough defense, made a charge. They trailed by only three, 41-38, after Susan Bender (So., Indianapolis/Roncalli) split a pair of free throws with 4:30 to play.

DePauw got within one at 49-48 on a three-pointer by Kelly Morrison (So., Warren, Ind./Huntington North) with 21 seconds to go. Then Morrison grabbed an errant Panther free throw, called time out with 12 seconds remaining, and the Tigers had a chance to steal a victory.

But Alicia Smith knocked the ball away from DePauw's Jamie Selip (Fr., Indian Park, Ill./Lyons Township) and then Macy sealed the deal with two free throws to make the final score 51-48. Hanover never relinquished the lead for the whole contest.

Hanover's Smith (Jr., Hope, Ind./Hauser) led all scorers with 20 points. Amy Hackworthy grabbed 10 rebounds. The Panthers were playing without leading scorer Amanda Howard. Hall led the Tigers with 12 points. DePauw shot just 32 percent from the floor for the game.

DePauw's loss snapped a seven-game winning streak and dropped the Tigers to 1-1 in the conference. Hanover evened its record at 7-7 and moved to 2-0 in the ICAC.
