THE COACHES
Kris Huffman is in her fifth year with the Tigers and her
teams have posted an 85-41 record for a .675 winning
percentage. The former Iowa Miss Basketball and Iowa
Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee is the
winningest coach in DePauw history both in terms of
number of victories and winning percentage. Huffman was
the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the
Year in 1996 after leading the Tigers into the NCAA
Division III tournament for the first time.
Baldwin-Wallace's Cheri Harrer, a 1985 Findlay
graduate, is in her eighth season with the Yellow Jackets
and her teams have posted a 129-84 record for a .606
winning percentage. She has led B-W to an equal or
increasing win total each of her last seven seasons. Over
the last five seasons, her teams are 110-50 for a .688
winning percentage.
SERIES RECORD
DePauw and Baldwin-Wallace are meeting for the first time
this afternoon. In fact, this is the Yellow Jackets first
game against an Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference
opponent. The Tigers are 2-0 in their history against
Ohio Athletic Conference schools as they beat Otterbein
last season and Capital in November of this year.
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
Baldwin-Wallace comes into the game with a 23-5 record
after Wednesday's first-round win over Hope College,
75-71. The Yellow Jackets are seeded third in the Great
Lakes Region after finishing in a second-place tie in the
Ohio Athletic Conference standings. Three of B-W's five
losses came at the hands of the top-seeded team in the
Great Lakes Region, Mount Union.
The Yellow Jackets are paced by four starters in
double figures with junior Jen Swinehart leading the way
at 13.0 points per game. She's followed by senior Lori
Peddicord at 12.6 points, senior Julie Work at 12.4
points and sophomore Angie Beard at 10.4. Work leads the
team with 9.4 rebounds per contest.
B-W shoots the ball well as evidenced by their 46.4
field goal percentage that ranks 11th in Division III.
Likewise, they shoot the ball well from three-point range
and rank ninth at 37.6 percent.
TIGER SEASON RECAP
The Tigers haven't lost since watching a late-game lead
slip away against still undefeated Millikin on January
10. That win streak has reached a record 14 games after
Saturday's ICAC tournament championship game win over
Manchester. Two of the other three losses have come at
the hands of Central Region second seed Washington (Mo.)
in the first game of the season and to NAIA Division I
fourth-ranked Simon Fraser.
Kelly Morrison comes off the bench to lead the Tigers
with 13.4 points per game. The junior leads the nation in
three-point shooting at 50 percent and set ICAC records
for three-point percentage and free throw percentage. Ann
Hall is next at 12.7 points per game with Susan Bender
rounding out the double-digit scorers with 10.0 per game.
A big key for the Tigers this season has been on the
boards where they average a 13.2 rebound advantage over
the opposition. Kelly Bailey lead the way with 8.6 per
game and five-foot-nine Amy Hasbrook hauls own 8.0 per
outing with over 44 percent of those coming on the
offensive glass. Like the Yellow Jackets, the Tigers
shoot the ball well from three-point range at a
nation-leading 40.9 percent.
REVIEWING B-W'S FIRST ROUND WIN
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in their
first-round game with Hope, but that would be the last
lead they would have the remainder of the half as the
Flying Dutch led by as many as 10 points in the opening
20 minutes. Hope's lead was 35-30 at halftime. The
visitors still led by seven with just under 15 minutes
left in the contest, but a 10-0 run in less than two
minutes gave the Yellow Jackets a three-point lead. The
game was tied three more times before B-W took the lead
for good with just over one minute to play. Jen Swinehart
led the Yellow Jackets with 23 points and nailed four of
seven three-pointers. Julie Work added 10 and a team-high
seven rebounds. Capital shot nearly 47 percent from the
floor, while holding Hope to just over 37 percent.
THE TIGERS LAST GAME
DePauw is coming off a 76-62 win in Saturday's ICAC
tournament championship game against Manchester. Kelly
Morrison scored 17 for the Tigers, while Kelly Bailey
added career highs of 16 points and 17 rebounds. Bailey
was named the tournament MVP with Morrison and Susan
Bender earning all-tournament honors.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Baldwin-Wallace is making its third consecutive
appearance in the NCAA Championship. They fell at home to
Calvin in the first round last year, 58-55, and 84-73 at
Defiance in 1996. Wednesday's win over Hope was their
first in NCAA tournament play. The Tigers have appeared
just once and that came in 1996 at Wisconsin-Oshkosh as
the Old Gold lost to the eventual national champions,
77-45.
SHARPSHOOTERS? TWO OF THE BEST ARE HERE Two of
the top three-point shooters in Division III square off
in this contest. DePauw's Kelly Morrison entered the week
ranked first in Division III at 50 percent from behind
the arc, while Baldwin-Wallace's Jen Swinehart is third
at 47.2 percent. These two teams are among the best
three-point shooting teams in the nation as DePauw leads
the country at 40.9 percent and B-W is ninth at 37.6
percent.
OTHER NATIONAL STATS Baldwin-Wallace began the
week ranked 11th in field goal percentage at 46.4
percent. The Tigers are sixth in free throw percentage
(72.8) and fourth in rebound margin (+13.2).
SCHOOL RECORDS ON LINE Not only will today's
winner advance to the "Sweet 16", but they will
also set a school record for wins in a season. Both teams
currently have identical records to last season.
OTHER RECORDS BROKEN THIS SEASON Both these
teams have seen school records go by the wayside.
Baldwin-Wallace has set new marks for points, field
goals, three-pointers made, assists, and blocked shots.
DePauw has set new season standards for three-pointers
(108) and free throws (445).
FIRST ROUND REVISITED Wednesday's first round
wasn't full of many surprises as home teams won 12 of the
first 16 games. The 16 games were decided by an average
margin of 13.5 points. The closest game(s)? The Hope-B-W
and Oneonta-Elmira games were both decided by four
points.
