14TH-RANKED TIGER WOMEN TO FACE SECOND-RANKED ST. THOMAS IN WEST SECTIONAL

Greencastle, Ind. - The 14th-ranked DePauw women's basketball team, winners of a school-record 15 straight games, travels to St. Paul, Minn., this weekend where they will compete in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball West Sectional.

 

The 23-4 Tigers square off with the host University of St. Thomas (25-1) on Friday, March 13, at 6 p.m. CST. The Tommies come in with a 13-game winning streak and ranked second in Division III. The 8 p.m. CST game features number-three ranked Mount Union College (Ohio) against number-four ranked College of St. Benedict .

 

The sectional is one of four around the country with the winners of each earning a trip to the Division III semifinals at one of the competing institutions, March 20.

The Tigers, seeded second in the Great Lakes Region, earned a bye in the first round of the tournament and then defeated Baldwin-Wallace in the second round on Saturday, 70-63. St. Thomas, seeded first in the West Region, also earned a first-round bye and then defeated Central (Iowa), 85-56 on Saturday evening.

 

DePauw's 23 wins this year topped last year's record of 22. Over the last two seasons the Tigers have posted a 45-8 record and over the last three are 64-15.

 

The Tigers are making their second trip in the NCAA tournament, while the Tommies have been to 12 straight and 13 in the 17-year history of the Division III tourney. St. Thomas won the Division III title in 1991 and finished third in 1995 and 1996.

 

Tickets for each sectional session are $4 for adults and $2 for students and can be reserved through DePauw University. More ticket information will be available later.
