COACHES:
Austin's Robin Potera is in her fifth season with the Kangaroos with a
record of 85-46. She led her teams to back-to-back American Southwest
Conference titles over the previous two seasons and to the East Division
title this season. Over the last three years her teams have posted a 65-17
record and have advanced to the NCAA and NAIA rounds of 16 in 1998 and
1997, respectively.
Kris Huffman, in her sixth season with the Tigers, is the winningest coach
in school history with a 107-46 record. Earlier this week she was named
the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after directing
DePauw to a perfect 18-0 record in conference play. It was her third conference
award in the last four years. Over the last three seasons the Tigers are
66-13 for an .835 winning percentage.
SERIES RECORD:
Saturday's game is the first meeting between the two school in women's
basketball.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY:
This is the Kangaroos' second appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship
and they've posted a 3-1 record after Wednesday's win. Last year, they defeated
the SCAC's Southwestern University at home before winning at Randolph-Macon
in the second round. They then fell to top-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the
round of 16. The Tigers are making their third appearance in the last four
years with a 1-2 record. In 1996 they lost to eventual national champion
Oshkosh in the first round. Last season the Tigers knocked off Baldwin-Wallace
in the second round before falling at St. Thomas (Minn.) in the round of
16.
REVIEWING AUSTIN'S FIRST-ROUND TRIUMPH: For the second time in as many years,
the Kangaroos traveled to Randolph-Macon and knocked
off the Yellow Jackets on their home floor. After Randolph-Macon led
early, Austin outscored the hosts 39-7 to close the half with a 45-16 lead.
The visitors scored the first 11 points of the second half to push the lead
to 40. It eventually reached as many as 45 points. Junior center Rachel
McNamara led the Kangaroos with 20 points, while Natasha Rodgers notched
her 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards. Marisa
Hesse added 15 points and Catherine Weir 11. Austin shot 58 percent in the
first half and held the Yellow Jackets to 23 percent shooting over the first
20 minutes.
THE TIGERS' LAST GAME: DePauw put the wraps on a perfect inaugural
SCAC season on Saturday as they defeated Millsaps 85-40. Junior guard Jamie
Selip led the Tigers with a career-high 17 points. Kelly Bailey added 14
and Lindsey Rush 13 in just 10 minutes. Susan Bender scored six, grabbed
eight rebounds and dished out a season-high 10 assists. In that game the
Tigers shot 68 percent in the first half.
TWO OF THE 10 FINALISTS ARE HERE:
Two of the finalists for the Jostens Trophy that goes to the Division III
Player of the Year are playing in this game. Austin's Marisa Hesse and DePauw's
Kelly Morrison are among the 10 vying for the award that goes to the nation's
top player based on basketball ability, academic prowess and community service.
