Eighth-ranked Tigers fall at top-ranked Washington

St. Louis, Mo. (12-7-02) - Visiting and eighth-ranked DePauw fell to 5-1 on the season after a 73-56 loss at top-ranked Washington (Mo.) University in the championship game of the Washington University Division III Shootout. The Bears improved to 7-0 with the victory.

 

The teams traded baskets early, but the Bears took an 11-4 lead afer Laura Crowley buried the second of four first-half three-pointers with 13:40 left. DePauw closed the gap to two at 13-11 when Sarah Zondor knocked down a trey with 11:51 left.

 

However, the Bears then asserted themselves in the post as they scored the next five points to start a 16-2 run that would push their lead to 29-13 with 6:36 left in the half. During that stretch, Hallie Hutchens scored six with Terri Lakowski and Diana Hill each adding four.

 

The lead reached as many as 17 points, but the Tigers chipped away in the closing minutes of the half with a 10-2 run that included a three from Jamie Grogg and seven straight from Dana Ferguson.

 

The Bears extended the lead to 19 in the opening six minutes of the second half and later held as much as a 22-point lead on three occasions.

 

Ferguson paced the Tigers with 14 points, while Crowley led the Bears with 12, while Suzy Digbyy and Lesley Hawley each scored 10.

 

DePauw travels to Wittenberg on Saturday.
