Dr. John W. Oswald
Sport(s): Football, Track & Field (Men's)
His senior year John Oswald earned letters in track and football and in the latter sport earned all-state honors at guard. He also picked up the Walker Cup and Phi beta Kappa honors. He continued his interest in football as a graduate assistant coach at U. of California-Davis in the early 1940's. Sports Illustrated awarded him its Silver Anniversary All-American award in 1962. Eight years later he became president of The Pennsylvania State University, where he (and Joe Paterno) led the Nittany Lions to 12 bowl games and the national championship in 1982-83. Dr. Oswald was unable to present tonight because Penn State today is dedicating a building which will carry his name.
