Tigers Top Franklin With Run in Bottom of Ninth
Greencastle, Ind. (3-18-03) - Mike Gonzalez hit a base loaded bloop single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth that scored senior John Stephens with the winning run in a 3-2 victory over visiting Franklin. DePauw improved to 4-5 with the victory, while the Grizzlies fell to 4-3.
DePauw scored first in the fourth as Josh Boock drew a one-out walk and moved to third on John Younger's infield single and a throwing error on the play. Matt Deahl then delivered a single to center to make it 1-0.
Franklin tied it in the sixth as David Bedwell singled to left and stole second. Jeremy Neibert doubled to left center, scoring Bedwell.
Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Younger's single up the middle plated Gonzalez and gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
The Grizzlies again knotted the score with a run in the seventh as Ryan Martin reached base after being hit by a pitch. Richard Mittman moved him to second with a two-out single before Bedwell drove Martin in with a single.
Kyle Dobbs led off the Tigers' seventh with a double and Jason Davis came in to relieve Franklin starter Jeff Harden. Harden struck out the next three DePauw batters to get out of the inning.
Franklin put runners on first and second in the eighth, but a fielder's choice ended the threat for the Grizzlies. In the bottom of the inning the Tigers had runners on first and second as well with a fielder's choice ending the frame.
Dobbs led off the ninth with a single through the right side and moved to third after Stephens reached on an error. Ryan Sipe was intentionally walked to load the bases and Zach Harris reached on a fielder's choice with Dobbs being thrown out at the plate. With two outs, Gonzalez looped a fly ball to shallow right that brought home Stephens with the game-winner.
Younger and Dobbs each collected two hits for the Tigers who totaled nine on the afternoon, but left 12 on base. Terry Kinnett had three hits for Franklin with Bedwell adding a pair.
T.J. Pruzin pitched two scoreless innings in relief of starter P.J. Mitchell to even his record at 1-1. Davis suffered his first loss for the Grizzlies despite striking out five in 2 2/3 innings of work.
The Tigers played errorless ball, while the Grizzlies committed five errors.
DePauw opens Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday when they host Oglethorpe in a single game at 3 p.m.
