Tigers sweep series with Sewanee; run win streak to nine straight

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the first game and defeated visiting Sewanee 13-8 and then swept the twinbill with a 7-0 win in the nightcap. The Tigers extended their win streak to nine straight and have won 15 of their last 16 to improve to 20-9 overall and 12-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Sewanee dropped to 8-20 overall and 0-8 in the SCAC. With the four-game series sweep the Tigers clinched a spot in the SCAC tournament.

In the first game, the host Tigers fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of the first game as Lane Shackleton hit a two-run homer and David Tipps later scored on a wild pitch. DePauw scored one in the first on Kevin Ehinger's double that scored John Younger who led off the inning with a single.

Sewanee took a 6-1 lead in the second as Chad Henson drew a base loaded walk and Tipps drove in a pair with a single.

DePauw took the lead with a six-run second as John Younger drove in one with a bases loaded single and Ryan Sipe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Chris Newman then scored on a passed ball before Ehinger delivered a three-run homer to make it 7-6.

Sewanee tied the game in the third when Casey Cook led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Dawson Smith's groundout. They then took an 8-7 advantage in the fourth after a failed pickoff attempt at first allowed Shackleton to score from third.

DePauw regained the lead in the fifth as Ehinger led off with a single and Zach Harris followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw. Slade reached on a Sewanee error that scored Ehinger before Newman and Younger added RBI singles.

Three more runs cross the plate in the sixth as Ehinger scored on a wild pitch before another Sewanee fielding error allowed Harris to score from third. Newman later singled home Slade to make it 13-8.

Younger, Ehinger and Newman each had three of DePauw's 14 hits, while Harris added a pair. Ehinger finished with four RBI and three runs scored. Slade also scored three for the Tigers. Tipps and Cook each had two of Sewanee's seven hits.

Dave Edmonds improved to 4-2 on the season and finished the game by retiring the last seven batters. Shackleton dropped to 1-6 with the loss, but only two of the runs he allowed were earned.

In the nightcap, Mark Alson pitched a two-hit shuout over nine innings and struck out nine while walking just two in improving to 3-0. Josh Curtis suffered the loss for Sewanee and dropped to 0-2.

Newman's fielder's choice grounder in the second scored Harris and gave the Alson all the support he needed. DePauw added two more in the fourth on Kyle Dobbs' sacrifice fly and Younger's RBI single. Dobbs added another sacrifice fly in the sixth and Newman hit one in the seventh to make it 5-0 before Sipe hit a two-run homer in the eighth, his third of the weekend, to close out the scoring.

Younger, Sipe and Newman each had two of DePauw's 10 hits, while Carter Thurman and Hunter Albany had Sewanee's two singles. Alson didn't allow a Sewanee runner past second and held them hitless for the first 4 1/3 innings.

DePauw travels to Franklin on Tuesday, April 6, for a single, nine inning game.
