Tigers and Stormy Petrels split twinbill

April 15, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - Jack Gavin's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth scored Jon Newman with the game-winning run in DePauw's 6-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory in game one of its doubleheader with visiting Oglethorpe. The Stormy Petrels topped the Tigers, 8-6, in the nightcap to earn a split.
DePauw is 22-14 overall after the split and finished SCAC regular season play at 11-5. Oglethorpe is 10-28 overall and 5-10 in the SCAC. The Tigers advance to the SCAC Divisional Playoff where they'll face Southwestern in a best-of-three series at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn., April 20-22.
Gavin drove in Drew Holy in the second on a groundout and Taylor Hoffman doubled home Justin Weiner. Holy added an RBI double in the third and scored on Gavin's base hit. Chris Newman's fifth inning single to left plated Jeremy Dickinson and lifted DePauw's lead to 5-0.
Oglethorpe trimmed the margin to 5-3 with three in the fifth as Brendan Pilger drove in one with a single before Andrew Llano added a two-run base hit. The Stormy Petrels then knotted the score in the seventh as Tim Ernst led off with a walk and moved to second when Pilger reached base on a DePauw error. Llano then doubled to right which scored Ernst.
After an intentional walk to Robert Pavelka, the Stormy Petrels tied the game on J.J. Rizzo's single to right center. Tiger reliever Paul Rodenhouse, who entered the game in the sixth struck out the next three Oglethorpe hitters to end the threat.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the seventh, but couldn't bring home the game-winner and the teams went to extra innings. Each team left two on in the eighth before Oglethorpe's Chris Lucas doubled in the ninth with one out and moved to third on a groundout. Steven Archer then lined a shot to left, but DePauw's Matt Kleine made a diving catch to end the inning.
Jon Newman led off the DePauw ninth with a walk and advanced to third when an attempted pickoff throw to first by the Oglethorpe catcher went into right field. Gavin then lifted the game-winning flyout to right.
Holy and Adam Ford each had two of DePauw's 10 hits, while Gavin drove in three in the win. Pilger and Llano each collected three hits for the Stormy Petrels, while Rizzo added a pair. David Morefield improved to 2-0 after pitching an inning of scoreless relief. Ernst dropped to 0-1 after entering the game in the sixth.
In the nightcap, Oglethorpe got all they needed with seven in the second on six hits. DePauw battled back with four in the fourth as Matt Fritz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Sam Linette drove in two with a single to center. Eric Reese drove in Fritz with a fielder's choice grounder.
The Tigers closed the Oglethorpe lead to 7-6 when Ford scored on Fritz's groundout and Weiner came home when Linette singled to right. The Stormy Petrels, however, added an insurance run in the sixth when Ernst scored from second on Llano's single to right. DePauw left two on in the sixth and loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Ernst came in and got the final two outs.
Weiner and Linette each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Linette drove in three. Llano led the Stormy Petrels with three hits followed by Ernst, Pevelka and Matt Anderson with two each. Tim Greenfield improved to 4-4 with the win, while Matt Westenkirchner slipped to 3-1. Ernst recorded his first save.
