Tigers Drop to 6-4 Following Loss to Titans

March 8, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Visiting and 16th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan pounded out 24 hits and scored in seven of the nine innings and defeated DePauw, 23-7, at Walker Field. The Tigers dropped to 6-4 with the loss, while the Titans improved to 3-1.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jon Newman singled home Taylor Hoffman before the Titans took the lead in the second as Tim Marzec plated Bob Huppert with a sacrifice fly and Pat Kirchhofer scored after Brett Moore reached on an error.
Jack Gavin's second-inning sacrifice fly scored Drew Holy and knotted the score at 2-2. Kirchhofer hit a two-run homer to left center in the fourth to make it 4-2, but Hoffman hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame to cut the Titans' lead to 4-3.
Illinois Wesleyan's first five hitters in the fourth collected hits capped by Casey McIntosh's three-run homer. They added two more in the inning to extend the lead to 11-3. DePauw added one in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-4 before the Titans scored another seven in the fifth on Huppert's grand slam to left center and Marzec's three-run shot to left.
The Titans scored one more in the sixth and two each in the seventh and ninth before the Tigers added three in the ninth.
Hoffman went four-fo-four in the loss, while Newman added two hits. The Tigers totaled 10 hits for the game.
Marzec, Moore and Kevin Goshorn each had four of the Titans' 24 hits, while Kraig Ladd and Huppert each had two. Marzec drove in five, while Huppert finished with four RBI. Geoff Page delivered Illinois Wesleyan's fifth homer of the day with a two-run blast in the ninth.
DePauw opens Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 14, with a doubleheader at Rhodes.
