Tigers' second-half rally falls short in NCAA loss to 15th-ranked Warhawks

March 3, 2006, Whitewater, Wis. - The DePauw men's basketball team battled 15th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater to a tight game throughout, but came out on the losing end of a 76-68 decision in the NCAA Division III opening round matchup at Kachel Gym.

The host Warhawks led by as many as 15 in the first half at 28-13 and still held a 36-25 halftime lead.

DePauw still trailed by 12 at 46-34 before Mike Moore and Alex Stewart hit three-pointers to close the gap to 46-40.

The Tigers closed the margin to three on a couple of occasions and still trailed by just six with less than two minutes to play, but Anthony Mlachnik's tip-in and Jeremy Manchester's two free throws put the game away.

Stewart led the Tigers with 19, while Stephen Schott added 11. Melvin Williams led Whitewater with 16, while Mlachinik and Rob Perry each scored 15 and Mike Toellner added 14.

The Warhawks shot 50 percent for the game, while the Tigers hit 41.9 percent. DePauw knocked down six of its 3 second-half three-point attempts and were nine-of-21 for the contest.

DePauw held a narrow 33-32 edge on the boards with Austin Brown leading the way with eight. Andy Freund paced Whietwater with six. Moore dished out a game-high six assists in the loss.

The Tigers finish the season at 15-13 including a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title, while the Warhawks improved to 23-5 and advanced to the second round to face Illinois Wesleyan which defeated Carroll (Wis.), 81-68.
