Chris Clemens is entering his second year as assistant men’s and women’s golf coach at DePauw after a two-year stint at the University of Indianapolis.
Prior to arriving at DePauw, Clemens had a successful run as assistant men’s golf coach at UIndy where he helped coach the team to two top-10 team finishes at the NCAA Division II Championships and two Great Lakes Valley Conference championships. Individually, his players copped three all-America citations, three all-America scholar honors and one Byron Nelson Award finalist.
In addition to coaching at UIndy, Clemens also spent a season as the head girl's golf coach at Speedway High School (Ind.).
Clemens, a Class-A Professional Golfers of America (PGA) teaching professional, has honed his teaching strategy over the years working as an assistant professional and a teaching professional at two prestigious Indiana golf courses, Southern Dunes Golf Course and Dye’s Walk Country Club.
Currently, Clemens is the PGA teaching professional at Kurt Shier Golf Academy at Southern Dunes Golf Course. During his time there, he has increased academy business by over 400% through many different means of marketing, provided over 750 lessons in 2011 alone to players of all ages and abilities, established a college preparatory program to help young golfers take the right steps to find the best college for them and has learned the necessary tools to instruct students on the TrackMan III, JC Video Analysis and Tomi Putting System training tools.
While at Dye’s Walk Country Club (the back-nine was designed by Pete and Alice Dye), Clemens was an assistant golf professional for three seasons before becoming a teaching professional at the Greenwood, Ind. country club. In his time there, he coordinated eight-week long junior clinics, gave over 1,000 personal lessons and ran junior clinics and golf leagues.
Clemens also has an extensive list of personal golfing accomplishments, winning six Indiana Golf Association titles, four Indiana PGA titles and securing five NCAA tournament wins. In 2012, he qualified for the Web.com (formerly Nationwide Tour) United Leasing Championship held at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind.
Clemens is also a certified club performance and fitting specialist by Mitchell Golf, an industry leader in golf club maintenance and fitting and was named a U.S. Kids Golf ‘Top-50 Kids Teacher’ honorable mention honoree.
A 2007 graduate of the University of Indianapolis with a major in marketing, Clemens, graduated with the best career stroke average in Greyhounds history at 73.70 and still ranks third. He also posted two of the top 11 single-season averages in school history.
