John Carter begins his 23rd season at DePauw University and his teams have posted a 238-136-23 record for a .628 winning percentage. The winningest coach in program history, Carter's teams have finished .500 or better 19 times.
Carter has directed six DePauw teams to NCAA Division III Championship appearances including the 2003 squad which advanced to the national semifinals before losing in overtime to the University of Chicago. In four of those six appearances, the Tigers advanced to the second round four times.
The 2003 team hosted the regional at Boswell Field and advanced to the quarterfinals with shutout wins over Hope and Wilmington. The Tigers then advanced to the national semifinals after advancing on penalty kicks against Virginia Wesleyan.
In 13 seasons of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, his teams captured three conference titles and finished second five times. Carter earned SCAC Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and 2003.
Carter was named the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996 and led the Tigers to a perfect 11-0 conference record in three years of play.
A 1986 graduate of Earlham College, Carter played four years for the Quakers. He worked there as an assistant coach in the fall following graduation and then again from 1988 before coming to DePauw in 1990.
In addition to his duties as soccer coach, Carter is also the director of DePauw's Indoor Tennis and Track Center and a part-time instructor in the department of kinesiology. Carter currently serves as Indiana girls' Olympic Development Program state coach.
