Tigers split doubleheader with Blackburn

Greencastle, Ind. - A late rally in the second game of a doubleheader with visiting Blackburn gave the Tigers a 6-5 win and a split of their twinbill with the Beavers. DePauw moved to 2-6 on the season, while Blackburn is 1-1 after its opening games of the year.

 

Blackburn scored four unearned runs in the top of the third of the nightcap, but the Tigers started their comeback with two in the bottom of the fifth on singles down the left field line by both Hillary Enyart and Ashley Sewell. The Beavers extended the lead to 5-3 with a single run in the sixth.

 

In the bottom of the sixth Caroline Provan led off with a single and scored on a double to left by Jessica Bowlds. Jessica Krueger's double to right center scored Bowlds before Enyart singled to advance Krueger to third. Nicole Kernan reached on a suicide squeeze that scored Krueger and tied the score at 5-5. Enyart then scored the game-winner on a wild pitch.

 

Enyart improved to 2-2 on the season while allowing just one earned run. Crystal Barchet suffered the loss for the Beavers. Kernan, Sewell and Enyart each collected two hits in the win. Danielle Thompson had three hits for Blackburn, while Kristy Bates added two.

 

In the first game, Blackburn jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Stacie Triplett tripled to left and scored on Thompson's double to right center. DePauw evened the score in the bottom of the first as Annie Morgan singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. She then scored when Sewell's base hit to left was mishandled by Melissa Benyr.

 

Blackburn scored the game-winner in the sixth as Triplett and Thompson singled to start the inning and advanced on Amanda Matthews' sacrifice bunt. Benyr then laid down a suicide squeeze that scored Triplett.

 

Andi Probst picked up the win to go to 1-0 on the season, while Lauren Curosh suffered the defeat for the Tigers and dropped to 0-4. Triplett collected three hits for the Beavers while Thompson and Benyr each had a pair. Sewell and Bowlds each finished with two hits for DePauw.

 

The Tigers host Huntington College on Saturday, March 13, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
