In the opening round, Stanford University's Alicia Barnes and Erin Burdette, ranked 13th in Division I, defeated Bondi and Steele by an 8-2 score to hand the DePauw duo its first loss in 20 matches this year. The DePauw tandem finished the fall with a 19-2 record.

Bondi and Steele are the first Division III players, male or female, to compete in the strictly Division I tournament. They earned qualification into the tournament after winning the ITA Division III title and then the ITA Super Bowl of Small College Tennis.
