DePauw splits doubleheader at Sewanee

April 10, 2005, Sewanee, Tenn. - DePauw rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 6-2 extra-inning win at Sewanee, but the hosts scored three with two outs in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap to earn a 6-5 win and a doubleheader split.

DePauw is now 18-11-1 overall and 3-5 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Confernece. Sewanee is 14-14 overall and 2-6 in the SCAC. DePauw concludes conference play on Thursday and Friday with a pair of 5:30 doubleheaders at Rose-Hulman.

In the first game, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the third on Nicole Kernan's solo homer and made it 2-0 in the fourth when Jessica Krueger, who reached base on an error, scored on a Sewanee error.

Sewanee came back with two in the sixth on RBI singles from Eliza Herrera and Sydney Paul.

In the eighth, Katy Lujan reachd base with a one-out bunt single and moved to second on Krueger's infield single. Lauren Curosh loaded the bases with a single before Carli Worthman reached on an error that scored Krueger and Lujan. Curosh scored on a wild pitch and Worthman scored on Ashley Sewell's single.

Kernan and Curosh each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while five Sewanee players had one hit each. Curosh improved to 11-5 with the five-hitter and Carla Shepherd dropped to 5-9.

DePauw fell behind 3-0 in the second inning of the nightcap on Katie Payne's RBI single and a two-run base hit by Molly Moore.

Jessica Bowlds' single in the fourth scored Curosh to cut the Sewanee lead to 3-1. DePauw took the lead in the fifth as Kristy Mahon led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on Lujan's sacrifice bunt.

Krueger reached on a fielder's choice that scored Mahon before Curosh and Worthman reached on errors allowing Krueger to score. Laura Schlensker followed with a single that scored Curosh and Sewell added an RBI single that plated Worthman and made it 5-3.

Sewanee's seventh-inning rally started with two outs as Kristen White and Shepherd singled and Herrera was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Garrett Marquardt followed with a double to center that cleared the bases.

DePauw totaled seven hits with Bowlds finishing with two, while Sewanee had 10 led by Marquart and Payne with two apiece. Hillary Enyart fell to 5-5 with the loss in relief of Curosh, while Shepherd picked up the win in relief.
