Tigers win 23rd straight; cap off perfect SCAC regular season

February 18, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - The fifth-ranked DePauw women closed out Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season play with a perfect 14-0 record and improved to 24-1 overall with a 72-61 victory over visiting Rose-Hulman.The Tigers extended their school and SCAC record win streak to 23 and their home SCAC-record win string to 26. The Engineers dropped to 13-11 overall and 6-8 in the SCAC.
DePauw's 9-0 run midway through the first half with five points from Gretchen Haehl and four from Liz Bondi pushed its lead to 14 at 24-10 with 8:25 left. The lead reached 17 at 36-19 and was still 13 at the break, 36-23.
Rose-Hulman closed the gap to 10 points early in the second half before the Tigers pushed it back to as many as 18 at 64-46. The Engineers closed to within 10 with just under four minutes to play, but Gwen Haehl hit back-to-back buckets to extend the margin to 14.
Bondi led the Tigers with 16 points and four steals while Caitlin McGonigal added 11 and Gretchen and Gwen Haehl each added 10. Suzy Doughty dished out seven assists and Lindsay Houin grabbed six rebounds in the win.
Rebekah Forsyth paced Rose-Hulman with 30 points and 14 rebounds, while Suzy Carlson added 14. Lindsey Reichle dished out a team-high five assists. Forsyth tied the SCAC career rebound record in the loss.
Rose-Hulman hit 45.7 percent from the floor to DePauw's 42.2, but the Tigers knocked down 4-of-7 from three-point range. The Tigers commited just 14 turnovers and scored 29 points off of the Engineers' 22 turnovers.
Both teams open SCAC Tournament play on Friday, February 24, in Memphis. The Tigers have earned the number one seed in the tourney and will play the number-eight seed in a 6 p.m. contest.
