DePauw bows out of NCAA Championship in extra innings

May 20, 2007, Salem, Va. - DePauw battled back to send its NCAA Championship elimination game to extra innings, but Plattsburgh State's Shannon Connors delivered the game-winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and advanced with a 2-1 win.

Kirby Davids reached on a DePauw error with one out in the eighth and moved to second when Amy Woo was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Connors singled to left center and scored Davids with the game winner.

Plattsburgh scored the game's first run in the fourth when Connors led off with an single just behind the circle. Kelly Combs ran for Connors and moved to second on Ashley Napear's ground out. Danielle Gjergji then ripped a double to left center, scoring Combs.

DePauw knotted the game in the top of the seventh as Rachel Gill led off with a single. Annie Morgan ran for Gill and moved to second on Kaitlyn Davitt's sacrifice bunt. Carolyn Bartlett followed with a single to center which moved Morgan to third and Lauren Rees delivered a sacrifice fly to center which scored Morgan.

Megan Soultz suffered the loss and dropped to 19-5, while reliever Stephanie Zweig improved to 16-7.

Chelsy Patterson, Jessica Krueger, Gill and Bartlett each had one hit for the Tigers, while Connors and Gjergji each had two of the Cardinals' seven.

DePauw finished the season at 37-7, while the Cardinals improved to 37-13. The Tigers' six seniors (Lauren Curosh, Annie Morgan, Kristy Mahon, Jessica Bowlds, Jessica Krueger and Laura Schlensker) finished their careers with a 107-58-1 record including a 68-17 mark over the last two seasons.
