October 27, 2007
October 27, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - Spud Dick equaled a school record with five touchdown passes including a record-tying three to Chris Gasbarra as DePauw picked up a 35-6 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over visiting Austin on the Tigers' 101st annual Old Gold Day.
DePauw improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC, while the Kangaroos dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The Tigers took the opening drive and scored in nine plays with Dick tossing a 19-yard pass to Jeff Bonner. DePauw looked to extend the lead on its next possession, but DePauw running back Jeremiah Marks fumbled at the Austin 1 and the Kangaroos recovered.
Early in the second quarter, DePauw took a 14-0 advantage on Dick's 10-yard pass to Gasbarra before Austin put its only points on the board on Ryan Cowley's 3-yard run which capped a 4-play, 51-yard drive. The point-after was off the mark and DePauw held a 14-6 lead with 7:03 left in the half.
DePauw wasted little time in answering as Marks rushed for six yards on first down and Dick teamed with Gasbarra for a 57-yard score with 6:12 remaining in the half. The Kangaroos drove inside the DePauw 25 late in the half, but DePauw's defense stopped them on downs.
On their first series of the second half, the Tigers again struck quickly. Marks carried three times and moved the Tigers from their own 44 to the Austin 43. Dick then completed a short pass to Bonner who flipped the ball to Marks and Marks covered the final 39 yards untouched for the score.
The Tigers' final points came late in the third as Dick teamed with Gasbarra for an 18-yard score with 1:20 left.
Dick completed 14 of 17 for a career-high 322 yards, while Gasbarra totaled four receptions for 92 yards including the three scores. Bryan Mulligan and Jeff Bonner also hauled in four each.
Jeremiah Marks posted his 18th career 100-yard rushing game with 101 yards in 27 tries. The Tigers topped the 400-yard plateau in total offense for the fourth time this season with 457 yards.
Ross Hasten led the Austin option attack with 60 rushing yards in 11 carries, while Cowley finished with 48 yards and Kasey Hall added 47 in just four attempts.
Ryan McElwain led the DePauw defense with seven tackles, while J.J. Costello paced the team with 1.5 tackles for loss as DePauw's defense limited Austin to just 196 yards. Scooter Means totaled 13 tackles for Austin including two for loss with a forced fumble and a recovery.
