Franklin Claims Third at Rokicki Challenge

November 29, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Franklin trailed by three with three minutes remaining but outscored Washington & Jefferson 13-5 down the stretch to take a 75-72 win over the Presidents and third place in the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge. The Grizzlies improved to 2-3, while Washington & Jefferson dropped to 2-4.
The Presidents led by as many as eight in the first half and took a 39-36 lead into the intermission. Paul Matthews hit a three with 3:29 remaining to give Franklin a 67-62 lead, but Will Conoley scored three straight field goals and Clay Starrett buried a three to cap a 9-1 run which gave the Grizzlies a 71-68 advantage with 39 seconds left.
The Presidents' Matt Drakeley scored a two-pointer with nine seconds left, but Franklin his all six free throws in the final seven seconds to seal the win.
Cononley led all scorers with 27 and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Starrett added 20 and Scott Trueblood followed with 12.
Drakeley led five Washington & Jefferson double-figure scorers with 18 followed by Matthews with 16. All-tournament team choice Brian Felker added 11 with Albert Varacallo and Zach Belhy chipping in 10 apiece.
Franklin shot 53.6 percent from the field to the Presidents' 50 percent and Washington & Jefferson held a narror 27-26 edge on the boards. Matthews and Varacallo each hauled down seven boards and Conoley paced Franklin with six.
