DePauw Advances in SCAC Baseball Tournament with Win over Austin

April 22, 2010, Millington, Tenn. — DePauw scored three runs in the first and that lead held up in a 3-2 victory over Austin in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The Tigers improved to 22-15, while the Kangaroos dropped to 19-19. DePauw faces Millsaps tomorrow at 7 p.m. WGRE will broadcast. For complete tournament information, please visit the official site.
Ben Gardner led off the first with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on Taylor Hoffman's fly out. After Rob McPike walked, Jon Newman followed with a two-out single which scored Gardner. Alex Wright (pictured) then doubled to right center scoring Newman and McPike.
Austin scored one in the fourth when Bennett Herrick singled home Jordan Robison who doubled earlier in the inning. The Roos added their other run in the eighth as Andy White drew a leadoff walk and scored on Tyler Applequist's double to left.
Newman had two of DePauw's six hits, while Herrick had three of Austin's nine hits and Mason Leech added two.
Brad Gerlach earned the win and improved to 3-2, while T.J.Witham picked up his second save. Gerlach struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings. Andy Manson and Witham combined to pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Austin's Tyler Steed dropped to 5-5.Back
