Illinois Wesleyan Tops Washington in Tipoff Tournament

November 20, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. —  Third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan improved to 1-1 following a 73-68 win over Washington-St. Louis at the DePauw Tipoff Tournament. The Bears, ranked fifth in the coaches' poll and seventh by D3hoops.com, dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

The Bears held a 42-35 lead at the half and extended it to as many as 12 points at 51-39 with 14:22 left. The Titans scored the next seven points, but Washington still held a 66-58 advantage with 4:52 remaining. Illinois Wesleyan then put together an 8-0 run in just under a minute to tie the score at 66-66.

Washington's Jordan Rettig hit one of two free throws with 1:36 left to give the Bears a 68-62 lead, but Nikki Preston hit a three with 54 seconds remaining to give the Titans the lead. After a Bears miss, Hope Schulte hit two free throws to push the Titans' lead to three with 26 seconds left. Washington missed a three on the other end and Schulte put the game away with a pair of free throws.

Preston paced Illinois Wesleyan with 28 points, while Olivia Lett followed with 15 and Schulte added 10. Stacey Arlis grabbed 11 rebounds.

Kathryn Berger paced the Bears with 22 points, while Rettig finished with 15. Alex Hoover dished out a game-high nine assists.

Washington plays DePauw at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
