September 24, 2011
September 24, 2011, Memphis, Tenn. — DePauw scored twice in the game's final four minutes, but it wasn't enough to erase a 17-point deficit as the Tigers dropped a 24-14 decision at Rhodes. DePauw dropped to 1-2 with the loss, while the Lynx improved to 1-2.
Dane Wilson scored on an 80-yard pass from Brett Stoots with 12:11 left in the second and that would be the only scoring in the first half.
DePauw's best scoring chance of first half came on its third possession, but Ethan Schweir's pass to Taylor Wagner on fourth down was one yard shy of a first down at the Rhodes 29.
Following the Rhodes score, the Tigers forced turnovers on three straight possessions as Patrick Keller forced and recovered a fumble before Matt Johnson and Robby Schuler intercepted passes. However, DePauw was unable to convert those into points.
In the third, Rhodes' Buddy Legens intercepted Schweir at the Lynx 40 and the hosts used nine plays to cover 55 yards before Lukas Stockhausen booted a 23-yard field goal with 4:12 left which made it 10-0. Near the end of the third, the Lynx took over on their own 18 and drove 82 yards with Stoots tossing a 9-yard scoring pass to Wilson to push the lead to 17-0 with 12:10 left in the game.
On the next series, Schweir left the game with an injury and Jackson Kirtley entered. Kirtley drove DePauw to the Rhodes 25 where they fell one yard short of a first down on a fourth-down pass play.
DePauw's first points of the game came on the next possession as Kirtley rushed in from 10 yards out to close the gap to 17-7 with 3:54 remaining. The Tigers were unable to recover their onside kick and the Lynx needed just 1:32 to drive 37 yards. Wilson scored for the third time on the afternoon as he rushed from 20 yards to make it 24-7 with 2:28 left.
Kirtley's 18-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Ude with 54 seconds remaining capped an 8-play, 62-yard series and trimmed the Rhodes lead to 24-14. Rhodes recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.
Rhodes outgained the Tigers, 408-361 including a 342-203 advantage in the air. DePauw's Jon Ellis led all rushers with 70 yards in 17 carries, while Wilson totaled 65 in 13 tries for the Lynx. Kirtley finished with 56 yards on four carries.
