Tigers Earn SCAC East's Top Seed after Split with Rhodes

April 12, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - The 14th-ranked Tigers clinched the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Eastern Division's top seed after splitting a doubleheader with visiting Rhodes. The Tigers took the nightcap by a 20-9 count after dropping the opener, 16-6.
DePauw is 28-8 overall and finished SCAC play at 13-3, while Rhodes is 26-11 overall and 10-5 in conference play. The Tigers head to next weekend's SCAC Cross-Divisional Playoff in Millington, Tenn., as the top seed in the East, while Rhodes is the number two seed.
Rhodes scored single runs in the third and fourth innings of the first game before breaking the game open with six in the fifth with three coming on Daniel Vanaman's bases loaded triple.
The Tigers closed the gap to 8-3 in the fifth on Matt Kleine's bases loaded walk and Mike Stout's two-run double, but the Lynx plated four in the sixth including J.R. Bizzell's solo homer and Vanaman's two-run shot.
Justin Weiner's two-run double Sam Linette's ground out RBI in the sixth made it 12-6 before Mason Mosby hit a seventh-inning grand slam to put the game out of reach.
DePauw totaled nine hits with Stout leading the way with three. Rhodes finished with 15 hits as Brent Lindsey and Mosby each had three and Bizzell, Vanaman and Andy Boucher followed with two apiece. Vanaman drove in five in the win and Mosby finished with four RBI.
Chris Catalanotto improved to 5-0 with the win, while Aaron Meyers dropped to 5-1.
In the nightcap, DePauw wasted little time in taking the lead as they loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the first and Stout cleared them with his seventh homer of the season.
The Lynx scored three in the two of the second, but DePauw pulled away with nine in the second before adding one in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the sixth.
DePauw finished with 14 hits as Taylor Hoffman, Stout and Jack Gavin each totaled three and Kleine followed with two. Stout drove in six and Kleine had five RBI, while Hoffman scored five runs.
Rhodes totaled 15 hits with Mosby leading with three and Bizzell, Richard Hurd, Vanaman, Matt Beesley and Boucher each finishing with two.
Brad Gerlach picked up the win and improved to 4-0, while Taylor Babich dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
DePauw begins SCAC Cross-Divisional Playoff play on Friday at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
