Tigers Drop Final Game of SCAC Series

March 21, 2010, Birmingham, Ala. — DePauw collected just three hits and dropped the final game of its three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series by a 4-1 score at 16th-ranked Birmingham-Southern.
The Tigers dropped to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play, while the Panthers improved to 16-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Following a two-hour rain delay prior to the start, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Alex Jacques led off with a single and moved to second when Taylor Hoffman reached on a walk. Jacques advanced to second when Rob McPike reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Sam Linette's single to right.
Birmingham-Southern knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Whitaker reached on a bunt single and moved to second. He advanced to third on Jon Walker's fly out and scored on John Lawroski's single.
The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Leachman led off with a single and later scored on Bryan Higginbotham's single. The hosts added unearned runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the win.
Jacques, Hoffman and Linette each had one hit in the loss, while Drew Leachman led the Panthers with three of their 10 and Higginbotham had two.
John Narramore improved to 4-0 with the three-hitter and struck out 14 along the way. McPike suffered the loss after pitching 6 2/3 innings.
The Tigers travel to LaGrange for a 4 p.m. contest tomorrow.
