Fourth-ranked Tigers Earn Split with Panthers

April 10, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Fourth-ranked DePauw scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh but fell 11-9 to visiting Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon in the second game of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Tigers took the first game by a score of 4-2, and are now 17-7-1 overall and 6-4 in SCAC play. Meanwhile, Birmingham-Southern is now 22-8 on the year and 13-3 in conference action.
In the opener, DePauw scored all of its four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Emma Minx led off with a solo home run to left, followed by Amy Hallett’s solo shot one batter later. With two outs, the Tigers recorded consecutive singles by Cymone Allen, Rachel MacBeth and Brianne Weeks to give them a 4-1 lead.
In the circle, Emily Bichler held the Panthers scoreless over the next three innings until Birmingham-Southern’s Ashley Bice knocked a solo home run in the top of the sixth. However, DePauw would hold on for the win.
The Tigers totaled nine hits, with Hallett and Allen picking up two each. Birmingham-Southern collected six hits, including two each by Bice and Beth Lefler.
Bichler improved to 16-6 with the victory, while the Panthers’ Ronni Ferris dropped to 12-6.
Birmingham-Southern struck early in the second game, plating six runs in the top of the first. Beth Lefler knocked in two runs with a double to right center. The Panthers would score three more runs on a passed ball, wild pitch and an RBI single before the inning was over.
DePauw got on the board in the bottom of the first as Brianne Weeks scored on a single by Minx. The Panthers added two more in the top of the second, including an unearned run, to extend their lead to 8-1.
Down 11-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers responded with three runs to keep the game going. Haley Buchanan launched a three-run homer over the left field fence to make it 11-4.
DePauw also sparked a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, as Weeks and Jen Koskinski reached on back-to-back singles. Both scored on a double by Minx, followed by Buchanan’s second home run of the game. With the score at 11-8, Holly Paris added a solo home run, but the Tigers were unable to keep the rally alive.
The Tigers posted 14 hits, led by Minx’s 4-for-4 performance. Bice had three of Birmingham-Southern’s 14 hits. DePauw also turned a triple play in the top of the seventh of the contest.
Bichler dropped to 16-7 with the loss, while Lefler improved to 10-2.
