Women's Basketball Team Set for International Trip
August 1, 2001 - The DePauw women's basketball team departs on Friday, August 3, for a 10-day trip that includes stops in Australia and Honolulu, Hawaii.
The team arrives in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday morning where they will play three games. They then fly to tropical Cairns, the capital of the "Deep North," where they will stay for two days before flying to Honolulu for the final two days. The team returns on the morning of Monday, August 13.
While in Sydney, among the many activities they'll take part in is a tour of the famous Opera House and a trip to the Featherdale Wildlife Park. As part of their two-day stay in Cairns, they will cruise to the Outer Great Barrier Reef which is the world's largest coral reef.
"This is obviously a tremendous cultural experience for our student athletes," ninth-year head coach Kris Huffman said. "The trip is something they may never have an opportunity to experience again."
In all, 13 players will make the trip for the Tigers who are coming off a 19-6 season that included a three-way share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. They return all five starters to a team that's gunning for a sixth straight conference title.
