Tigers rebound with 70-60 win over Southwestern
Greencastle, Ind. (1-19-03) - Coming off its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference loss on Friday and playing without leading scorer and rebounder Dana Ferguson, the DePauw women's basketball team rebounded with a 70-60 SCAC win over visiting Southwestern.
The Tigers, ranked 19th by D3hoops.com, improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC, while Southwestern fell to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
DePauw jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening two minutes and led by as many as nine in the first half before the Pirates closed the gap to 31-26 at halftime.
Southwestern's Sarah Christofferson hit two free throws with 17:55 left to tie the game at 33-33. Neither team scored over the next 3:16, but the Tigers gradually pulled away to a 10-point lead at 53-43 on Jill Schneider's basket with 5:44 left.
They extended the margin to as many as 11 with 2:13 left. The Pirates got as close as six in the final minute, but DePauw nailed all eight free throws in the final 55 seconds to hold on for the win.
Amy Argetsinger led DePauw with 17 points followed by Sarah Zondor with 14 and Kim Weigle with 12. Zondor's 14 matched her career high she set on Friday. Schneider hauled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the win. DePauw outrebounded Southwestern 40-32.
Christofferson and Samantha Peden paced the Pirates with 12, while Hillary Mueller added 11.
The Pirates committed just nine turnovers in the contest.
DePauw hosts Sewanee on Friday, January 24, at 6 p.m., while Southwestern hosts Trinity at 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 25.
