Mary Smith begins her 20th season as assistant women’s basketball coach at DePauw and 14th as a full-time assistant. Her primary responsibilities include working with the post players. Smith also is the director of promotions and marketing for the athletic department.
The Eau Claire, Wis., native earned four varsity letters in basketball at Western Illinois University after a stellar high school career. Smith earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology at WIU. She then earned a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa where she also served as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s basketball team.
Since coming to DePauw she has also earned a master’s degree in sport management from Indiana State University. During her first two years, she was an assistant volleyball coach and the Tigers captured their first-ever Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in her second season.
Smith has spearheaded successful charity fundraising drives for the basketball team that have raised over $100,000 for various charitable organizations.
