Tigers defeat Denison and advance to round of 16

March 3, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw held off Denison's second-half runs and advanced to the NCAA Division III Sectional (round of 16) for the second straight year and fifth time in the last 10 years after a 74-66 second-round win over Denison.

DePauw committed just five turnovers to Denison's 16 and outscored the Big Red, 22-3, off those turnovers. The Tigers built a 12-point lead midway through the first half before Denison closed the halftime margin to 37-29.

The Big Red used a 5-0 run capped by Sarah Perrine's three-pointer with 15:22 left to close the DePauw lead to 45-41, but DePauw scored seven straight to push the margin back to 11. Again Denison battled back and eventually cut the lead to 60-57 on Kristen Sheffield's two free throws with 7:20 left.

The Tigers still held a 65-61 lead before layups from Caitlin McGonigal and Liz Bondi made it 69-61 with 2:34 remaining. Denison got as close as five, but the Tigers hit three of four free throws in the final 35 seconds to seal the win.

"We played them earlier in the year and we knew that it was going to be a tough game," DePauw coach Kris Huffman said.

"We made some things happen on the defensive end. They're (Denison) an outstanding team and we're thrilled to be sitting here tonight."

Bondi paced the Tigers with 15 points, while McGonigal added 14 and Suzy Doughty finished with 12. Emily Marshall paced DePauw with 10 rebounds and Doughty added five assists.

Caitlin Krupka led Denison with 13 points, while Sheffield had a double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds. Carolyn Simpson added 11 points and eight boards.

The win also marked the 300th in DePauw coach Kris Huffman's 14-year career as she's posted a 300-82 record.
